Have a great winter break!

Hello Everyone,

We made it to our final day before winter break! Yahoo! I threatened to throw a temper tantrum in the principal’s office if I didn’t get to see the kids today. It wasn’t the best example of modeled behavior, but I couldn’t allow us to part without saying a proper goodbye. (Just kidding… or not.)

We all decorated our gingerbread kids today and got to take them home. They are for keeping and not for eating. The kids know this but there is always the chance of amnesia hitting since winter break tends to do that to us. I hope you all enjoy the smell.

Ms. A. is ready to take over the classroom and will be planning many fun things over the break. She has all of your emails and will be in contact soon. The kids really love her and she is such a fantastic teacher that I hope I don’t get forgotten!

We also said goodbye to Isabella and Amalie today. They are both moving to new states and we were very sad to see them go, but gave them hugs and wished them well. Isabella, and her mom, would love it if you want to write to them.  We can write as a whole class, or if you want to send your own personal note you can let me know and we can send it to them. I’m sure both Amalie and Isabella would be so happy to get letters from their friends at SIA.

It broke my heart to say goodbye today. I will do my best to keep you updated and visit when I can. I will miss you all so much.  Have a wonderful break! Keep safe! I will see you soon(ish).

Cheers!

Winter Celebration

Hello All,
Can you believe that this is our last week before winter break? Those snow days really let it sneak up on us! This week is going to be full of our continuing gingerbread theme unit that encompasses all subjects. We are continuing to welcome Ms. A. into our room. We also met with Mr. Nick in our mini groups for the first time and were very thrilled to get to be with our friends in a smaller setting.

To celebrate the New Year we will be having a small classroom celebration on Friday. If you are interested in helping out during our 8:45- 10 time please let me know by Wednesday so we can plan for you in our room. We will still have art and technology that day so our celebration will not bleed over into that time.

Thank you so much everyone! It has been such a wonderful year so far and I hope to see you all soon.
Cheers,
Jessica Sipp

For any lingering question about our conferences

This post is just in case there are any questions about the conferences we had last month. We are currently reassessing (yes, it has already been that long) and it made me feel like this would be a good refresher for everyone. With this wild weather and so few days left, it seemed prudent to get this information out before we leave for break and have big changes when we get back.

Here is what was on the table, literally, during our conferences in November.

The white conference notes page- After assessing your child at the beginning of the year and working with them I have written up a set of goals for your child. These goals reflect each section of the report card that is going home in January.  Each section is based on the Common Core Standards for what kindergarteners are expected to know by the end of the year. The hand written notes are my current goals for your student. These change month-by-month depending on your child’s mastery of each skill. Some sections your child has mastered more than others.  That is developmentally expected at this age and is nothing to fret over. Some of my notes say “see assessment” because that is where I would pull out examples of where I obtained this current level at the conference. If you have any questions let us set up a time for you to come in.

A blank example Report Card- This is an example of the report card that will be sent home in January. There are many pieces to this and there will be some areas that are not assessed because, naturally, we have not covered all the standards only four months into the school year. By the end of the year it is our goal to have your student proficient in all the standards present in the report card.

A blue Common Core handout- These are the standards we base our report cards on. This handout is to get your feet wet if you have not worked with them yet. Instead of Oregon State Standards, which naturally change when you move state to state, the country is working on standards that hold countrywide. These are the Common Core.

P.E. progress report- Ms. Meredith has given us your student’s current standing in P.E., and would be happy to talk to you about her comments on her sheet. If you have any questions, please contact her directly.

Shape poems book- This is the book we made in class. I kept it for conferences to show you a current example of your child’s writing skills, drawing, and observation skills. They had to draw the shape, hunt for it in the room, and write where they found it. Please share this with your student and practice the poems and shapes together.

ABC chart- This is the alphabet song we sing in class, and use to write in our journals. The kids use it as a tool to check their sounds and letter shaping. Please use it as you see fit during homework, or letting your child teach it to you. No matter how many times it is practiced, it always helps to do it again.

Green reading discussion paper- This is an example of how we discuss books in class. Feel free to use it as a tool to guide you as you enjoy your time reading together at home. This is not homework to be turned in, but something to keep in mind that we as a class are trying to discuss.

Finally there is my maternity leave. I am due December 27th, so it is my plan to teach up until I go into labor.  I will be gone after winter break and I plan to return after spring break. My sub, Mrs. A., will be talking over my classroom while I am away. The school staff and I have the upmost confidence in her ability and are quite excited to have such an amazing sub.  She will be in charge while I am away and is excited to have the time to get to know your kids while I am gone.  She has become a large part of our classroom community and your child can tell you all about the time they have already spent with her

Pennies For Patients

Hello Everyone,

There was a paper flier that went home in their backpacks yesterday explaining the "pennies for patients" coin drive. Mr. Nick's section of the newsletter should have also contained some information as well, but if you're not getting the newsletter please let me know. I know that sometimes the newsletters can start to be a little like white noise in this crazy time of the year with all the preparations for winter break. If you're not getting them though, I'll e-mail Sam so we can get you covered.

Pennies for Patients is a yearly drive we do to try to inspire a seasonal sense of giving and "filling someone's bucket." Ask your child what it means to fill a bucket. :) The drive is still going on and will be for a while. Today I'm sending home the coin boxes. I'm sending them home separately so parents had time to read the paper letter and talk with their children if they want to participate or not. It's not mandatory. It can be as simple as a penny you found on the sidewalk (we get a lot of those in kindergarten).

A final note: Tomorrow is western day! Yahoo! Please still dress warmly. :)

Cheers,
Jessica Sipp

Winter is coming…

Hello all,
It’s so great to be back and getting into our groove again. It sure feels like Jack Frost is here even though we have been getting beautiful sunshine. Thank you for sending your child with warm clothes so I can send them outside to recess.
There are a few dates to keep in mind this winter. The mass SIA e-mail has already been sent but I’d like to point out that yes, Kindergarten will be participating in the winter concert. It is Thursday, January 16. It will be at 7:00pm at the SHS Auditorium.

Also, in case it gets fuzzy during the last few weeks of break, Winter Break is December 23 to January 3. Our class calendar is going out soon so you can have your count down if you wish.

Thank you again for all that you do! It was so great to get to talk to all of you at conferences.

Cheers,
Jessica Sipp
