Have you seen them?

We've been looking and looking but they are so sneaky! Do you want to have a sneak peak into our gingerbread unit? Here you go!

This is the book we are going to "research" tomorrow to see if we notice what might make the gingerbread critters feel safe and return to.

This is the project that we will be making if our research discovers that a gingerbread critter might feel safest at home.

We received a note in class from our critters. They asked us to sound out words and write them. It turns out that their 12th favorite word is our name!

This is a picture of "snow" writing. We write letters in paint to create painted paper for a project in January. It's helpful for seeing that you need your whole body to create a letter and not just your finger tips. Did you know it takes your whole arm and shoulder to make your writing happen?

Here is our character study of gingerbread kids in the hallway.

This is our setting study. Note the blue sky and supporting characters in the background. They were very detailed in what needed to be in the setting. There are schools and pig farms to help out the gingerbread critters.

This is a poster of the title, author, illustrator, setting, and characters in the book "The Gingerbread Cowboy."

Today we were sequencing the events in "The Gingerbread Girl." Some worked alone...

And some worked together.

Gingerbread Creatures

Oh my goodness, what a week!

We've read many books about gingerbread people and compared their stories. We are learning about setting, titles, author and illustrators, and characters. We are predicting the new gingerbread endings. We also made gingerbread creatures (not to eat) to decorate and take home. It was quite the experience having twenty-four five year olds mix up a bowl of cinnamon and applesauce to create the dough. Here is what it looked like before they went into the oven...

This morning when I came in to check our gingerbread buddies, they were missing! We couldn't find them anywhere! They left some clues though and we went in search of them.

We will keep reading more books to get some more ideas of how to catch the sneaky gingerbread critters. Hopefully they will be back in time for break!

From the library:

Ms. Terra is having a great promotion in the library right now. I would love the Naruto poster or the Blazer poster myself, but I bet you and your kiddo would enjoy this great reading treat:

Read and enter for your chance to win a POSTER!!

Our Win a Poster reading incentive is going on now until December 19. The rules are simple, read a book, get a ticket, enter to win the poster of your choice.  Of course, if you read to your student that counts!  Students can receive their tickets during their library time or recess.

Kindergarten is having a comprehensive literacy unit of study? What on earth does that mean?

What are we doing in kindergarten? We are having a comprehensive literacy unit of study. We are looking at a variety of books based on the gingerbread man story and comparing them. We will do sequencing, counting, reading, writing, and a whole bunch of other learning this month.  We will play games and even get to make our very own “gingerbread” person. Let’s hope that the one we make won’t run away like the one in the story does!

Turkeys Everywhere!

This week has been chalk full of learning and fun.  We studied the first thanksgiving with a focus on how our lives are different from the lives of the pilgrims. We revisited shapes and colors with our turkey paintings, and did some writing to give our turkeys voices. Today we will talk about "needs versus wants" with a sorting activity of magazine pictures of food. It should be fun. We also took our taste of tally marks. That was tricky. We will try it again in December.

Speaking of December, we will have a Giving Tree in the front of the school for anyone interested in donating hats, gloves, and scarves. So feel free to give (or not) to your heart's content. We will be donating the contents of the tree to the SAFE (Support Advocacy Freedom Empowerment), formerly known as Columbia County's Women's Resource Center. You can view their website here:http://www.noexcuse4abuse.com/.

I am looking forward to seeing you at conferences.

And here we are hunting for circles and making tally marks for each one.

Thankful Times

Hey everyone,

We've been talking about being thankful In kindergarten and reading many books in tandem. It's been a blast hearing all your kiddo is thankful for. Ask them! We plan to celebrate our study of "Thankfulness" with a P.J. party (kindergaten only) on Thursday. Wear your warmest P.J.s so you can still go outside!

Pictures went home Monday, did you get yours? Did you perchance get someone else's? We put them in backpacks but they sometimes wander off. Check your child's backpack please!

I'm thankful for all these goofballs! Thanks for letting me teach them.

Health Screening

We had our health screening today. We read a book on the body and talked about how our lungs and heart keep us healthy. Ask your kiddos about all the cool doctors and nurses who helped us out today.

November is the time for Conferences!

Hello and Welcome,

It is already November, and it is a short month. This week is the only week that has a full five days of school. We made our calendars in kindergarten to send home so you can see what we are up to. This weekend is the Harvest Festival, and the 24th and 25th are parent/teacher conferences. I cannot wait to get to share how fantastic your child is. Please check their backpack tonight for your time. We would like the bottom portion returned to school ASAP. If the scheduled time does not work, please contact Sam to see how we can accommodate you.

Also, the Book Fair is on the 14th! This is a great time to find some books for your family. We will be creating wish lists next Monday morning and getting our first peek at what a Book Fair looks like. If you would like to purchase anything our time to buy is 9:30 on Friday the 14th. If you are not interested, that is just fine too.

It has been so wonderful to get to know you and your child. I really enjoy reading their homework and getting to see a little more of you outside school. If you ever have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Have a lovely day.

Calling all leaf collectors!

It’s that time of year when none of us can resist picking up the beautiful rainbow of leaves on the ground. You’re in luck! We are going to be in need of dry, flat, clean leaves in our classroom. We are going to read the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. After we will be making our own leaf images by cutting/gluing/arranging all the collected leaves. If you know the names of the leaves you bring in, that is fantastic too! Please make sure to keep your special leaves at home because the ones that come to school will be shared as a class. We are going to have so much fun celebrating the fall in this unique way!

Literacy Night!

It's literacy night at SIA! Come as your favorite book character. It can be as simple as a name tag or paper mask. I happened to have this Viola Swamp outfit in my closet ("Miss Nelson goes Missing"). It's going to be quite fun!

P.S. The costumes are for fun, you don't have to if you don't want too.

An Important Note From the Library

Dearest library patrons,

Many of our books are coming back to the library with water damage.  As the weather changes and we won't dry out for a while, it is important to realize that as backpacks get wet, so do the contents of your backpack.  If you wear a jacket that gets wet and you put it in your backpack when you arrive at your destination, the contents of your backpack will also get wet.  Please take an extra second to think about what is happening inside your backpack before you leave it on the ground, shove the coat in it, or anything else that can harm your library books or other important cargo. I would rather spend money on new books than replacing damaged books, so please do your part in being responsible library patrons.

Thanks!
Ms. Terra

Literacy Night

Hello All!

Have you befriended Sauvie Island Academy on Facebook? I have. Many times it is the first place I hear about snow days, school closures, and other important messages.

Right now we are doing shelfies (a selfie in front of a bookshelf, get it?) to spread the word about literacy night! Literacy night is a chance to see some of our curriculum and have a family fun night. It's October 23rd from 6-7pm. We'd love to have your shelfie AND your sweet families on literacy night. Please join in the educational fun!

Our Pumpkin Patch Trip!

We had so much fun! We picked out pumpkins, had a tractor ride, and got to hang out with the neat-o mommies who joined us today. Thank you one and all for making today a success! If you have any pictures please email me your favorites. I got a few, but we'd love to see some more!
