School Spirit Week

Hello all,

I know a flier went home, as did the Sauvie Island Newsletter, but I thought a friendly reminder couldn’t hurt. This week is super busy since it is school appreciation week and it can feel a little full.

Our goal is to raise 500 pounds of food for the Columbia Pacific Food Bank located in St Helens, Oregon.  We will encourage students to bring in non-perishable items to school Monday, January 26th-Thursday, January 29th. Students are to place their canned food donations in their labeled classroom basket in the lobby of the school. The winner will be announced at our Sauvie Spirit Assembly on Thursday at 2:15pm.

Thanks so much for being a part of our community!

Math Work

During our "Math Work" stations we are able to meet the diversity and complexity of needs for each student by providing a variety of pracitce. Her are just a few examples.

Spacial and shape recognition. Note the blank shape puzzles for the more complex needs of those no longer working on just shape recognition.

Dice games for rote counting, one to one correspondence, and number recognition. Not to mention fun!

One hundred chart writing. We work on number recognition, patterns, and counting.

"Five gold coins" is a sneaky addition game. Some simply work on counting each color, while others are working on the many numbers and ways you can add them together to make five.

"Hungry Caterpillar" game is another spacial and shape recognition game. We make our own spinners and use the shape to see how many ways we can make a hexagon.

Word Work Jobs

Most days we write in our journals to practice our writing. There are some days it helps to work with words and letters in other ways. Here we are at "Word Works Time" where we are still working on our own complexity of understanding but we get to choose the medium in which we work with letters or words.

White board writing practice.

"I can see" sight word book stamping.

Valentine's letter writing.

Sight word stamping.

Letter matching mats.

A few pictures from the Children's Museum

Here are just a few pictures I took at the field trip. If you happen to have any, could you please email them to me at your leisure? I'd love to have them for the end of the year. Thanks!

Clothing exchange

Hey all,
Our information about the clothing exchange has gone out in backpacks. We know that after the holidays closets get cleaned to make room for new stuff. Bring in any washed gently used clothes you’d like to trade or donate. If you want some of these awesome clothes there is a half sheet of paper going home in your child’s backpack where you can mark if you are interested in your student receiving any of the great clothes we have been collecting. Please mark their sizes too. You have the weekend to think it over, but please return them by Monday.

Thank so much

Important DRA information

Hello Families,

Yesterday I sent out very recently completed DRA information. This was to let you see their progress as a reader and to give another explanation of what we are using the DRA for. I also sent home this week’s homework. It seems that many students accidently swapped one or more items yesterday which is understandable since they pack away together and they look very similar.

Please check your backpacks and make sure you have the one for your child, and if not please return so we can get it to the right family. I have a few coming back today since they were able to notice in time and we will hopefully send them to their rightful homes. Thank you so much for your help and understanding.

Cheers,
Mrs. Sipp

Toys at School

Hello All,
Just wanted to touch base with everyone regarding "Toys" at school.
In the handbook, pg. 46 it reads:

TOYS
"Please leave all toys, stuffed animals, gadgets, etc. at home.  They are not to be brought to school.  This includes footballs, basketballs, soccer balls and other playground equipment.  The school provides playground equipment for recesses and P.E"

Pokeman Cards would fall under the guides of "Toys" therefore, I think it is important to be on the same page. Please let ALL your students know the expectations about toys and explain that Pokeman Cards are toys, therefore they need to remain at home. Therefore, we should not be seeing them at school, which includes Morning Care and After Care.

Important Infromation

Good morning and happy Monday!

I hope you all had a restful break.  We are ready to jump back into school this week with a Storyline unit on community. We will be looking into what makes a community, problem solving, and differentiating our wants versus needs. As the kids are looking at jobs in the community we have an opportunity to dive a little deeper and let the kids explore jobs our community needs.  If you have time on January 14th to come into school we’d love to have you come and talk a little about what you do. It’d be great if you could tell us your job title, what you do, and how you think it adds to your community.
The next day, January 15th, we will take a trip to the Portland Children’s Museum to further explore community jobs and the workspaces that those jobs need. We’d love to have you with us! We have five parent chaperone spots open for the first parents who let me know that they are available to come.  If you have the time for us we’d need you to lead a group of 3-5 students around the museum. Let me know ASAP because we only have five spots. We will be at the museum from 9:30-11:30. We will not have lunch there, but because our schedule will be so tight coming back everyone will need to bring a sack lunch. We will most likely miss our lunchtime so we will be eating in the classroom when we get back.

We have so much learning to do and so much fun to have! I cannot wait to get started!
